چکیده

Taking into account the pressure anisotropy in the solar wind, we study the magnetic field and plasma parameters downstream of a fast shock, as functions of upstream parameters and downstream pressure anisotropy. In our theoretical approach, we model two cases: a) the perpendicular shock and b) the oblique shock. We use two threshold conditions of plasma instabilities as additional equations to bound the range of pressure anisotropy. The criterion of the mirror instability is used for pressure anisotropy p⊥/p‖ > 1. Analogously, the criterion of the fire-hose instability is taken into account for pressure anisotropy p⊥/p‖ < 1. We found that the variations of the parallel pressure, the parallel temperature, and the tangential component of the velocity are most sensitive to the pressure anisotropy downstream of the shock. Finally, we compare our theory with plasma and magnetic field parameters measured by the WIND spacecraft.

Analytical solutions for anisotropic MHD shocks

A new method to analytically solve the anisotropic MHD system of equations describing shock transitions is presented. As this system is known to be under-determined (there is more unknown parameters than available equations) free parameters must be chosen. From observational contraints it appears that the magnetic amplitude jump is a good candidate as it is generally available more frequently a...

Mirror and firehose instabilities in the heliosheath

We investigate the nature of the heliosheath plasma behind the Termination Shock across which jump relations in anisotropic MHD are formulated. Along side analytical results for downstream parameters in the strictly parallel and perpendicular cases we numerically solve the Rankine-Hugoniot relations for arbitrary shock angle and strength. We then focus on two temperature anisotropy driven insta...

The Physics of the Earth’s Collisionless Shock Wave

A fast mode collisionless bow shock is a permanent feature of the solar wind interaction with the earth. The shock is approxim_ately stationary in earth coordinates, its structure, however, changes in space due to different B; values, and in time, due to different solar wind conditions (Mach number M and 8, T,/ TI...). The earth's bow shock has revealed itself as an impressive tool for studying...

Propagation of Interplanetary Shocks into the Earth’s Magnetosphere

A thorough study of the propagation of interplanetary shocks of various origin through the Earth’s magnetosphere is expected to improve our understanding of the Sun-Earth system. The interplanetary shocks interact with the bow shock and cause pressure pulses on the magnetopause and its movement, launching different waves into the magnetosphere. Therefore geosynchronous satellites (GOES, LANL) a...

Magnetohydrodynamic Jump Conditions for Oblique Relativistic Shocks with Gyrotropic Pressure

Shock jump conditions, i.e., the specification of the downstream parameters of the gas in terms of the upstream parameters, are obtained for steady-state, plane shocks with oblique magnetic fields and arbitrary flow speeds. This is done by combining the continuity of particle number flux and the electromagnetic boundary conditions at the shock with the magnetohydrodynamic conservation laws deri...
